In 1962, Thyssen Edelstahlwerke in Witten (formerly: Edelstahlwerke Witten) started operation of the first ladle degassing unit at their open-hearth steel plant. in 1968 the next unit could already be put in operation. Since then, the details of this process rapidly experienced further development; now the process is already being applied for various requirements by well-known steel makers throughout the world.
