TERTIARY METALLURGY

The target of "tertiary metallurgy" is to economically produce "isotropic" materials for industrial applications of the highest demands. These materials will be applied especially by industries such as air- and aerospace, power and energy, automotive as well as oil and gas. There are three main technologies to produce such materials.

Tertiary metallurgical plants holistically designed to meet the steel plant demands. Together with SMS group, an important stregth is the comprehensive competence for the entire process for special steel applications. SMS Mevac will serve the expanding market for these technologies resulting from rising demand for high-performance materials.

For the time being, highly purified melts are produced with a single remelting process (ESR or VAR). Such materials are used in heavy load applications for tools, bearings, valves, fittings, pumps etc.

Materials for more demanding applications - turbine parts, orthopedic implants but also modern consumer electronic devices - are produced by so-called double-melt technique: vacuum induction melting (VIM) followed by remelting (ESR or VAR). However, really high-performance materials for aerospace application require the triple melt route: VIM followed by ESR followed by VAR. Typical products made of such high-performance materials are blades, discs and shafts for newly designed turbines, fasteners for landing gears and engines, airfoils etc. The markets for all these applications are steadily expanding and so is the demand for our plants.
